My Dad Said Internet Business was the List, I said Huh?

The Oldies Revisited and the New Era of 2016 Marketing

It was about 3 years ago when I asked my dad what he thought internet business was all about.  His answer was “It’s about the List.”  But, I didn’t get it.  I mean I really didn’t get it.  The reason is that I was making my money from traffic software.  Advertising purchases and upgrades were what internet business was all about.

My overall perspective changed to see the REAL VALUE OF A LIST and how it works intimately with a business.

The most common sense relationship exists with your company and the public.  Value given is rewarded with value back.  A business person is in contact with their list every time they send out an email, every time they write a blog post and a former reader returns, and every time they tweet or post on social media.

These moments of contact are the time to provide VALUE.  For it is here that the all powerful BRAND, the word we hear too much in marketing, is founded.

The Classic Forms of Contact with Your Current(List) and Prospective Customers Include:

Email Marketing: It is far from dead as some people may argue.  In fact, it’s the strongest, quickest form of advertising we have.  People opt in to emails and their email box waits to hear from you.  The conversation of emails is private only to these select people.  The list may be huge, but remember, it’s a private club.  It’s a great place to provide VALUE and build a relationship.  Treat your list with respect, be grateful, and value will be rewarded with value.

Best Article I have seen on List Building.  Best Article on Subject Headers.

Blogging:  It’s another classic item worth it’s weight in gold.  The blog is the place to put information value out there.  Cover things that surround your industry.  Your blog should be designed as well as your website.  This is also a place that you want to collect email addresses.  The name of the game is to attract new business and always to stay in contact.  Here are two tools to get your blog shared and set up for collecting email addresses.  Both are highly suggested.  Rocket Responder and Sumome.com  Sumome has some great FREE functions and Rocket Responder is a dream auto-responder.

Affiliate Marketing: Don’t over look what power your affiliates can have.  We have a strong affiliate program that we benefit greatly from and we are thankful for it.  We are more then happy to share our company profits with our hard working affiliates and you should too.

Banner Advertising: A banner can be placed almost anywhere.  Finding the right place to purchase banners can take some time and experimentation.  Just know that they can be incredibly cost efficient.  Don’t forget that even though banners can be small they still offer a chance to brand(show presence) by getting your logo and or picture out there.  Are you on a low budget?  Check out this system that offers free banner trading, Buckets of Banners.

Forums: I don’t do forums myself, but fortunately I have dug up some information on promoting in them.  If your interested in forum advertising check out these tips.

Search Engine Optimization:  My current feeling is that it can be quite expensive to achieve and maintain search engine position with a paid service if your on a low budget business.  However, if your developing a high quality site with creative marketing, google should be able to get it right and give your site the nod of approval.  Enjoy this short video on overall online success strategy which is followed by an interview with an SEO expert.  15:02 in is the SEO part if you want to skip ahead.  Big thanks to Clint from Olympiaseo.com for the interview.

Analytics: In 2012 the latest version of google analytics was released.  If you would like to signup for google analytics free you can do so here.  Here is a guide to getting started.  You can generate an insane amount of statistics that are sure to help your business here.

Finally, the big social media networks.  These are marketing gold.  I have already written on social media in 5 Proven Strategies to Small Business in 2016, 302 Million Reasons to Read this Blog Post, and The Viral Spread of a New Product or Action.

In summary, dad was right, internet business is in the list, but might I add dad, it’s also in a VALUABLE BRAND.  Hope you enjoyed it and it improves your business.

Great article Marcus very informative. All of the features are important. But when you are on a budget don’t worry about Google. But all of the top forms of marketing are very crucial for success and being there day in and day out. We marketers work 7 days a week with hardly ever a day off. Once in a while I need a day of. I do take parts of the days off, but need to be on my toes 7 days a week! 🙂
